The Dutch police have announced an arrest in connection with the Rotterdam art heist that occurred on October 17.
On Monday the Dutch police arrested a 19-year-old Romanian woman, Natasa Timofei, who is the girlfriend of one of the suspected thieves.
In one of the most dramatic art heists in recent years, Rotterdam’s Kunsthal Art Gallery was burglarized in the fall, when criminals made away with seven of the museum’s most valuable pieces. Among the stolen artworks were examples by Picasso, Monet, Gauguin, Matisse, Lucian Freud, and Meyer de Haan. Police pursued the case by combing security footage for suspicious-looking museum visitors who might be making preparations for a robbery. They singled out two Romanian men, 25 and 28, based on their behavior and the frequency of their visits. These men were arrested in Bucharest in January. Timofei, who is the girlfriend of the 28-year-old, is believed to have been living at the apartment where the stolen canvases were stored after the burglary.
